Summertime was a breathtaking film to look at. It is
truly a travel log for Venice and for romance. Kate plays a never
married woman who has saved up to take the vacation she has always
dreamed of through Europe. We come in on her arrival to Venice.
With David Lean's direction, the film and Kate are both exceptional.
She captures the frustrations and complexities of being an American
woman, single and growing old. Americans were still believed to
be Puritans while Europeans were all about free love and romance.
Jane Hudson, played by Kate finds romance with Renato Di Rossi,
played by Rossano Brazzi and falls deeply in love with him even
though he's already married. Of course, in the end we have an acceptable
1950's conclusion, but I'll let you discover that for yourself.
