State of the Union,
is the screen version of the Pulitzer Prize winning play by the same
title written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Kate plays Spencer's
wife who, although estranged from her husband at the start of the
film, is asked to put up a good front for his political aspirations.
He is a candidate for the Republican nomination who eventually gives
up all his ideals in favor of being President. Kate, as Mary Matthews
stands by his side and is able to open his eyes to what is happening
so that in the end he pulls out of the race and admits that he has
been dishonest. Angela Lansbury is perfectly cast as the domineering
Kay Thorndyke, a glimpse of what she is capable of in the future.
The chemistry between her and Kate is almost as intriguing as is the
relationship between Kate and Spence.
