FILMOGRAPHY: Early Films
Quality Street,1937
Quality Street, is one of the many period films that Kate did in the 1930's. I happen to think its quite a jewel and love seeing it whenever its on. It also stars one of my favorite actors Franchot Tone (see my web site on Franchot Tone) as Kate's leading man, Dr. Valentine Brown. Kate plays Phoebe Throssel whose beau Dr. Brown never seems to get around to proposing. He leaves for the Napoleonic wars for ten years and comes back to find Phoebe an old maid school teacher that the now Captain Brown doesn't even recognize. To get revenge, Kate poses as her niece Livvy, but finds that the Captain prefers Phoebe in the end. The cast was wonderful and the sets and costumes truly beautiful.

The cast includes:

  • Katharine Hepburn .... Phoebe Throssel
  • Franchot Tone .... Dr. Valentine Brown
  • Eric Blore .... Recruiting Sergeant
  • Fay Bainter .... Susan Throssel
  • Cora Witherspoon .... Patty the Maid
  • Estelle Winwood .... Mary Willoughby
