A Bill of Divorcement was Hepburn's first film. She emerged from this film as a top Hollywood star. Playing Sydney Fairfield, she presented a vital and fresh screen presence that overshadowed her inexperience. The stars of the film, John Barrymore and Billie Burke, provided an excellent accent to this film about a shell shocked World War I veteran who has been divorced from his wife after she discovers his insanity.

The relationhips that develops between Sydney and her father is the root of this story. She gives up everything to be with him after learning that she too, may pass on the insanity to her own children.
