Adams, 1935
|
| Alice
Adams, was
a rewarding film for Kate. She and the film were both nominated for
Oscars. The attention focuses on life in a small town in middle America.
Kate plays Alice, who longs to be accepted into the society of her
wealthy friends who merely tolerate her. She meets Arthur Russell,
played by Fred MacMurray at a party and tells him all kinds of stories
about her life and her family. Alice invites Arthur for dinner and
she and her mother convince the entire family to put on airs to impress
him. Of course, the evening is a disaster, but all ends well.
Kate
gives a truly touching performance of this sad young girl who dreams
of better things. Directed by George Stevens, she acts particularly
well in a scene where she is in her bedroom window. While the
rain hits the window pane she is in tears because her evening
has been ruined. She is wonderful and so are the supporting cast.
