RED DUST, MGM 1932

A fabulous film that Jean did at a very difficult time in her life since it was made during the time that her husband Paul Bern was found mysteriously dead. Even so, it proved to be one of her best.

Set on a rubber plantation in Indochina, she plays Vantine a floozy from Saigon, who comes upstream hoping to evade the police. She attaches herself to Dennis Carson, played by Clark Gable who seems very interested until the new surveyor, Gary Willis and his wife arrive. The story proceeds around the triangle of Jean, Gable and Mary Astor who plays Barbara Willis.

Note: This was a huge success, not only for Harlow, but also for Gable and he later remade the film as Magombo in the 1950's playing the same role. This truly says something about the power of Gable.

The Cast includes:

  • Clark Gable .... Dennis 'Denny'/'Fred' Carson
  • Jean Harlow .... Vantine 'Miss Van'/'Lily' Jefferson
  • Gene Raymond .... Gary Willis
  • Mary Astor .... Barbara 'Babs' Willis
  • Donald Crisp .... Guidon
  • Tully Marshall .... 'Mac' McQuarg
  • Forrester Harvey .... Limey
  • Willie Fung .... Hoy, the Chinese Houseboy
