| DINNER AT EIGHT, MGM 1933 |
| Directed by George Cukor and produced by David O. Selznick when
he was still at MGM working for his father-in-law, Louis B. Mayer,
this screenplay is a witty and fast paced ensemble piece. Ensemble
films were very popular at the time due to the success of Thalberg's,
Grand Hotel done in 1932 and were used to display all the stars at
MGM. Everyone in this film plays their roles brilliantly and Jean
Harlow is at her most beautiful and shows a true comedic style. She
radiates an overt yet somehow innocent sexuality that she was known
for. The scene at the end with her and Marie Dressler is hysterical
and proves why we loved to watch Jean on the screen. |
