Comments: My dad tells me that we lived on Ms. Fontaine's place when I was very small. There was a white horse on the place that no one could approach, but I was seen out in the pasture, swinging on the horse's tail!! There was also a caretaker that would watch out for me. I have been hearing rumours that she was overwhelmed by the amount of mail she gets from fans and the volume has increased since the advent of numerous celebrity address websites. At age 87, she must feel that this step had to be taken. I completely support her in her decision. I heard that most days she was spending three to fours hours a day just answering her fan mail.

Comments: I am passionate about the brilliance of Letter from an Unknown Woman - this is one of the most brilliant women's films ever made, in Hollywood, Europe or elsewhere. It has romance, substance, texture, gorgeous photogrpahy and direction - and a truly fabulous performance by Joan Fontaine in what is a very tricky role. She has never been so poignant or empathetic as in this role - sheer magic.

My other favourite is Born to be Bad. I know this is not a very highly regarded film, but I really like it, and Joan is as venal and ambitious as Anne Baxter in the similar All About Eve.

The above two films show how interesting Joan was at her height, and in Letter from an Unknown Woman, she (and Louis Jourdan) will be remembered for a long time to come.

Comments: I read Joan Fontaine's "No Bed of Roses"
some years ago. I have since read the biographies of many classic era stars--female and male, but the women fascinate me the most. I can recite the Oscar-winning actresses and actors in the best acting categories by heart. I am generally aware of the relationships (familial and romantic) between stars, and I find all this and their lives very interesting. There are certain movies that I have never seen before, and perhaps one day before I die (I am 47 years old.), perhaps I'll have the opportunity to see and critique them. Most times I don't agree with the critics about performances and films in general. I think Bette Davis, not Katharine Hepburn, should have been a four-time Oscar winner. I believe that Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland should have starred in at least one picture together, and capitalized on the feud rumors --feigned, imagined, or real. I could go on, but I won't.

Comments: Awesome site! I especially love the opening photograph of Joan! Check out the latest issue of "Autograph Collector," on sale now...it contains a two-part article I did on Joan entitled "The Second Mrs. DeWinter--Collecting Joan Fontaine." There'll never be another like Joan. Not only was (and is) she a gorgeous woman, she brought true elegance to all her films. My favorite Fontaine performances aren't the "typical" ones--I appreciated "The Witches," "September Affair," "Until They Sail," "Ivy," and "Ivanhoe." Alas, I've never seen "The Affairs of Susan," "This Above All," and "The Constant Nymph." When are they gonna be released to video or DVD?
