Little Women, 1933

Little Women, 1933, directed by George Cukor is the first sound adaptation of Luisa May Alcott's book and, in my opinion, the best. The stars of the film are Katharine Hepburn as Jo, Joan Bennett as Amy, Frances Dee as Meg, and Jean Parker as Beth. This film convinced David O. Selznick that his future lay in filming the Classics since it made such a large profit during the depression. It was the first time that director George Cukor and Katharine Hepburn worked together and it was an excellent match. I love this film and, once again, the scenes are picture postcards of another era.

The cast includes:

  • Katharine Hepburn .... Josephine 'Jo' March
  • Joan Bennett .... Amy March
  • Paul Lukas .... Professor Fritz Bhaer
  • Edna May Oliver .... Aunt March
  • Jean Parker .... Elizabeth 'Beth' March
  • Frances Dee .... Margaret 'Meg' March/Brooke
  • Henry Stephenson .... Mr. Laurence
  • Douglass Montgomery .... Theodore 'Laurie' Laurence
  • John Lodge .... John Brooke
  • Spring Byington .... Marmee March
  • Samuel S. Hinds .... Mr. March
  • Mabel Colcord .... Hannah the Maid/Cook
  • Marion Ballou .... Mrs. Kirke
  • Nydia Westman .... Mamie, Mrs. Kirke's Maid
  • Harry Beresford .... Doctor Bangs
