FOREVER AMBER
20th Century Fox, 1947

Amber St. Clare is destined and determined to rise herself to the highest pinacle in life in order to be worthy of her love, Bruce Carlton. She grows up in Merrygreen in England in a Puritan family. The puritan lifestyle is so stifling to Amber that she runs away to London at the first opportunity. The opportunity comes when she meets Bruce Carlton, played by Cornell Wilde and Lord Almsbury played by Richard Greene. They are returning from the Civil War and journeying to London to seek the fortune promised by King Charles, played by George Sanders.

The story revolves around Amber's quest for greatness and her undying love for Bruce. She will happily sacrifice all for him. Unfortunately, Bruce doesn't see Amber as someone he wants to spend the rest of his life with and leaves her several times during the film. Each time Amber is plunged into a new life.

This was Linda's "big chance" and she has never looked more beautiful. As a teen, I loved this film and still enjoy it. Unfortunately, the morale code at the time required that the story be toned down so much that the film ended up being a weak representation of the book. However, it was a a financial success, but didn't bring Linda the critical acclaim she anticipated.

I still recommend and suggest you see it; if only to see Linda in her many costumes and hairstyles.
