In
Brooklyn circa 1900, the Nolans manage to enjoy life on pennies
despite great poverty and Papa's alcoholism.Joan plays Aunt
Sissy who has had a scandalous succession of "husbands"
and is therefore an embarrassment to her sister Katie, played
by Dorothy McGuire. The removal of the one tree visible from
their tenement is a symbol that lowers their hopes for a better
future. Young Francie's desires to transfer to a better school
and her father, a hopeless achoholic, does everything in his
power to fulfill her wish.
This
film is beautifully photographed and the story is heartwrenching.
Joan is at her best in this one.
